The standard sizes of the ideal barbecue for barbecue do it yourself
How pleasant it is to barbecue in good weather. But for this you need a brazier. And what if it is not there? You need to make braziers with your own hands! This is easier than it sounds, especially with the guidelines in this article.

What affects the size
Let's start by determining the size of the barbecue grill made of metal. Of all the parameters, only one can be called constant - the height of the sides is 12-15 centimeters. This is a comfortable distance from the coals, at which the meat is not steamed, but also does not burn. In addition, the consumption of coal is not critical.
The rest of the parameters can be customized and based on the circumstances:
- The width is selected for skewers. Since they often live longer than the barbecue itself, it is better to focus on them. The calculation is simple: you need to measure the length from the end of the handle to the tip and subtract 10 centimeters.
- The length depends on the number of skewers. How to cook a brazier with your own hands? On average, there should be a distance of 8-11 centimeters between individual skewers. If you are frying 10 servings at the same time, you need a length of 80 to 110 centimeters.
- The height of the barbecue grill should be comfortable for the cook. If it is inconvenient to bend down, you need at least 0.8-0.9 meters from the ground. But some people prefer to cook on their haunches, especially since the barbecue takes up much less space.
- The thickness of the metal braziers is again selected individually. If he always stands in one place and does not introduce himself to move it, it is better to take thicker iron, at least 3 millimeters. Such walls retain heat better. If you need to transfer it, you will have to go to the detriment of the heat capacity, but not less than 2 millimeters.
The right barbecue size for different ways of grilling meat
Do not forget that the correct barbecue grill is determined by the method of frying. Often the meat is cooked on skewers, but some prefer barbecue. Naturally, they need different temperatures, amounts of oxygen and equipment.
Above, we have already disassembled the dimensions of an ideal barbecue for 10 skewers. The same sizes can be transferred to a different number of servings. But with the lattice, the situation is slightly different. If you buy it separately, then they have special protrusions that fit the standard sizes of barbecues.
But it is also stationary. Then the length and width are already matched to it.

Brick structures
Unlike metal, brick heats up much more. By the way, that's why the meat is juicier and cooks faster. Width and height remain the same - they are selected according to your own taste. You can even make a full-fledged barbecue with an extractor hood and an extra countertop.
But the depth of the brazier is already determined by the size of the brick, but the masonry should be no more than 20 centimeters. As it was said, the brick retains heat better, so this height is permissible, with a coal fill of 5 centimeters.
By the way, only fireclay bricks are used for masonry, it is also called heat-resistant. It does not crack when cooled.
Dimensions and design features of a metal barbecue
Now let's look at how to cook a brazier with your own hands from metal. It is necessary to develop a scheme in which the meat will not be dried or steamed.
Folding (folding) braziers in a suitcase and without
Collapsible metal barbecues are made in case you need to often carry it with you on hikes. It is often made in a suitcase with handles, so it fits easily in the trunk. To the detriment of heat capacity, a thin-walled body is preferred.
For work you will need:
- Bulgarian.
- Welding machine.
- The magnets are triangles to maintain an angle.
In order to facilitate the construction, we take a thin sheet of steel 2 millimeters.
Here is a photo of a convenient brazier suitcase.
The construction is very simple:
- Blind protrusions-grooves are welded to the side panels. The legs for the barbecue are inserted there already in place.
- They are attached to long panels and the bottom with bolts or hooks can be put. Therefore, only 1 key is needed to assemble it on site.
- For layout, ordinary loops are used.
To prevent steel from burning out from constant heat, it is better to cover it with heat-resistant paint. On the sides we make holes for ventilation. It is necessary to provide a lock (ordinary hook with a thorn).

Collapsible braziers
Unlike folding, folding is assembled from separate parts on the spot. As a rule, it consists of only 5 parts. They can be connected with bolts, but it is much easier to make groove fasteners.
This video has assembly instructions. The size of the barbecue can be arbitrary to your taste.
To make a collapsible brazier with your own hands from metal, you will need:
- It is made of iron, so take a 2-3 mm sheet.
- Bulgarian.
- Marking tool.
- Heat resistant paint.
We just transfer the template to the metal, circle it and cut it out with a grinder.
Braziers with a metal roof
A good vertical do-it-yourself barbecue with a roof is suitable in case it is constantly raining in the region. It will cover the coals and you can cook even in a heavy downpour.
This video has detailed instructions for making. The body is made of a profile, which allows you to raise the brazier to a comfortable level. The roof is raised to such a level that the smoke does not enter the face and go above the head.
For a simple barbecue, you can take this drawing from metal with painted dimensions. You can add forged elements if you wish.
