How to take readings from an electricity meter, what to look for and how to calculate tariff payments
For two centuries people have been using electricity and paying money for it. Power supplying organizations all the time used different methods of metering the consumption of electric current, but the automatic option turned out to be the best one using meters with subsequent payment for the kilowatts actually used. In today's review we will try to figure out how to take readings electricity meter, without violating the procedure, what is the difference between taking readings from single and multi-rate meters, what forms of payment can be used today.

Types of meters and how they work
Today, manufacturers of electrical equipment produce two varieties electricity meters:
- induction - these are devices of outdated models, which are based on the principle of operation based on electromechanical induction;
- electronic or static, which are based on microprocessor elements and electronic components.
And although the filling of the devices is very different, they perform the same function - they take into account the current passing through them and display its amount. At the same time, the readings change over time, or rather increase. This allows you to more accurately record data for a certain period of time, which is the basis of electricity metering.
Where is the electricity meter
There is one very strict rule that determines the availability of the meter for taking readings of electricity. That is, the controller from the energy supplying organization at any time must freely approach the meter and take the data on the consumption of electric current from it. Therefore, in apartment buildings, devices are installed in electrical distribution boards, which are located on the stairwells.
In some old buildings, such a switchboard is not provided at the entrance. Therefore, electricity meters were installed in apartments. This is a big problem today, because not all owners of such apartments open their doors to controllers.
As for private houses, there are two places that can be used to install an accounting device: this is on the facade of the house or on a pole, from the latter there are wires stretched to the house. No other installation options are allowed.
How to correctly take readings from the device
Since today two types of electricity meters are still used, it is necessary to figure out how to correctly take the readings of the electricity meter of both types.
How to take readings of an induction type meter
So, an induction-type counter, or rather, its display is a spinning wheel under the dial. The number of digits in different models can vary from 5 to 7 characters. In this case, the last digit differs from the rest either in color, or in the size of the window, or highlighted with a comma. These are tenths of kilowatts, which are not taken into account when calculating the readings.
Attention! Some induction meters do not have a highlighting of the last digit, so the entire number series is taken into account.
By itself, the procedure for taking a reading is simple. Usually it is conducted monthly, so it is very important to keep records correctly for months either in a journal, or in a special book issued by the energy supplying organization, or using payment receipts, where it is necessary to indicate the captured data.
If the owner of a house or apartment changes the meter, then from the side of GorSvet an act is drawn up, which shows from which indication the consumed kilowatts should be counted. They will be included in the report as the beginning of the counter. For example, if at the beginning of the month it is 750, and at the end of 900, then the difference between them, and this is 150, is the consumed kilowatts. Multiplying them by the current tariff, we get the monetary equivalent, which must be paid.
It is clear that the dial has its final limit, and this is usually 9999.9, after which the counter does not stop, but continues to rotate, going to 0000.0. And if at the end of the month, when taking data, you have readings from a steel meter, for example, 0025.0, then for the calculation you will have to add a unit to this value not as a numerical equivalent, but as a sign. That is, when calculating, the final result will be 10025.0. And from it it will be necessary to subtract the last readings.
How to take readings in a short period of time
Before taking readings from the electricity meter, for example, for a minute, you need to find an inscription on the device that determines how many revolutions the meter should make in order to wind up one kilowatt. Typically 600 or 1200 rpm for induction models.
There is a red mark on the wheel, by which you can determine the rotation of one revolution. You count visually the number of revolutions per minute or for another period of time, thereby determining the power consumption. For example, if the wheel spins 300 times in one minute, then 300/600 = 0.5 kW.
How to take readings from an electronic electricity meter
In principle, the reading of the consumed electricity for electronic meters is exactly the same as for induction meters.The scoreboard displays numerical values that are updated at regular intervals. The calculation is carried out in the same way. This process is carried out if a single tariff system of electricity use is used.
Multi-tariff electricity consumption is two tariffs that have a significant difference in relation to the time of day. It is larger during the day, less at night. We will not figure out why this is being done, and whether it is profitable for the state, but it must be pointed out that there are difficulties with the taking of testimonies, although there is nothing complicated about that. You just need to figure out according to the instructions what and how to do.
Let's look at how to correctly take readings of electricity meters from different models. For this we will deal with the brand "Mercury".
Mercury-200 - taking data
Let's make a reservation right away that the Mercury-200 brand is both single-tariff models and multi-tariff models. The latter have modifications in the marking, namely 200.01, 200.02 or 200.03. But regardless of the type of readings are taken by pressing the "Enter" button, which is located on the instrument panel. It's just that everything will depend on the number of button clicks.
If the meter is used to account for one tariff, then readings are taken in the usual mode by pressing "Enter" once. The panel should display the designation T1. If metering is carried out at two tariffs, then "Enter" is pressed twice, where the amount of consumed energy is also shown at the second tariff.
How to take readings of the electricity meter Mercury-230
This is a multi-tariff device, which means that you will have to take data strictly according to the instructions. So, to take the meter readings for light at the maximum rate, you need to press the "Enter" button once. A control mark and an inscription T1 will appear on the display. In this case, the screen will show the data of the consumed electricity in kilowatt-hours. They should be fixed.
Now, by pressing a button, we bring to the T2 mark, where completely different indicators will be displayed on the board. And they must also be fixed. T1 is the daily rate from 7.00 to 23.00, T2 is the night rate from 23.00 to 7.00. That is, when the question is raised, how to take the readings of the day-night electricity meter, one must act exactly as described above.
How to calculate electricity according to a multi-tariff meter
Now we need to make the payment calculations. For example, T1 showed 1800 kW, T2 - 200 kW. In general, it turns out 2000 kW. Next, you need to take the old testimony of the last month. Let them be 1600 at T1 and 150 at T2. The total value is 1750 kW.
You need to check if everything is correct:
- 1800-1600=200;
- 200-150=50;
- 200+50=250;
- We do a check: 2000-1750 = 250.
Now for the payment. The obtained values of the difference in the readings of each tariff are multiplied by its value. Here we mean by our example, this is 200 multiplied by the day rate, and 50 by the night rate. Then their total amount is taken for payment.
It is very convenient for yourself to keep such records in the journal.
Payment period | Types of tariffs | ||
---|---|---|---|
T1 | T2 | Total | |
For the previous month | 1600 | 150 | 1750 |
Over the next month | 1800 | 200 | 2000 |
Difference | 200 | 50 | 250 |
From this table, when calculating the amount, only two indicators are used in the "Difference" section - T1 and T2.
How to remove data from the Energomer meter
In principle, all actions are exactly the same as with the Mercury-230 instruments. The only difference is the billing button. It is called "PRSM" on this counter. It should be noted that multi-tariff devices of this type belong to the category of new modern energy meters, therefore many brands are very similar in design, appearance and reading. Their only drawback is the high price of the product.
How to take readings from the Micron meter
A distinctive feature of taking a reading from the Micron counter is that for this you need to press one button. She, in principle, is present on the board in a single form, there are no others.In this case, two "check marks" will appear on the screen, which will move along the panel. The last one shows the tariff zones. As soon as the checkmark goes to the required zone, numbers will be displayed on the screen. This is the electricity required to calculate the payment.
The alignment of the checkboxes must be accurate. For example, T1 and R +, T2 and R +. The photo below shows the combinations for the first tariff zone.
How to take readings from a Saiman meter
These electricity meters began to be installed in all regions, when obsolete induction models were replaced free of charge for new electronic ones. Therefore, the bulk of the population uses them.
The device is simple. It has no buttons to scroll through the required data. They themselves show on the screen at regular intervals, so you have to wait for the number to appear indicating the consumed kilowatts. The frequency of the numerical values is as follows: first the date is displayed, then the time, then the device number, then the gear ratio and at the very end of "TOTAL". In single-tariff meters, the necessary data is immediately displayed, in multi-tariff meters there is a sequence in zones: T1, T2, T3, and so on. The video below shows how to count electricity from a Saiman meter.
Three-phase meters - how to take readings
Firstly, three-phase electricity meters differ from single-phase meters only in the number of terminals (incoming and outgoing). Such devices are not installed in apartments. They are usually used either in private homes, or in manufacturing, or in large buildings for various purposes, which have one owner.
Readings are taken in the same way as in single-phase devices. Accounting and calculation are also carried out in the same way with multiplication by the tariff. There are induction models in this group, and electronic, single and multi-tariff.
Electricity meter with remote reading
Not all apartment and house owners can deal with taking readings, paying and transferring data. Therefore, power supply organizations propose to install special meters that transmit data themselves. The main task of the owner is to process the payment.
Purely structurally, these devices differ from ordinary ones in that the display shows the day indicator, night and general in a certain sequence. The difference between the readings is 15 seconds.
In addition to the fact that all indicators go to the energy supply company through the Internet, and this is general data, as well as their analysis, there are additional options:
- accounting in the mode of different tariff zones;
- connecting and disconnecting the consumer remotely;
- forwarding notifications.
Advantages of this type of meters:
- Electricity consumption readings are recorded every day. They are always in memory, which is very important when solving conflict situations.
- It is possible to remove data remotely via the Internet. This applies primarily to consumers. For example, while on vacation or business trip.
- Accuracy of readings.
- Calculation accuracy when changing the tariff.
- Safety in the sense that the meter can be completely turned off remotely. This is very convenient if you forgot to turn off an electrical device in your house or apartment.
Attention! If payment for the consumed electricity has not been made for a long time, then the supplier company can independently unilaterally de-energize the building, house or apartment.
It should be added that today some manufacturers of meters of this type provide them with special readers. They are used to withdraw money and replenish the balance from a plastic card.
How to transfer readings
Previously, this was done by controllers who went around houses and apartments, taking readings.Since 2012, a new decree has been issued, where the owners of the real estate were obliged to remove the data from the electricity meters themselves and transfer them to the energy sales organizations. But this does not mean that there will be no control from the supplier. Its representatives can take data once a quarter, but at least once every six months. So outside control is still being done.
Many are interested in the question of what readings of the electricity meter need to be transmitted. There is only one indicator - the consumption of electric current, plus the period for which this consumption was made.
Data transfer times
There are no specific norms in the new rules. That is, a person can transfer evidence at any time. Although in the old rules this was precisely established. The only thing that you need to know is that if the indicators were not transmitted within 6 months, then the energy supplying organization will make its own calculation, taking into account the average electricity consumption for the past periods.
Therefore, electricity providers have developed a network of capabilities to make it convenient for consumers to transfer data no matter where they are.
Where to transfer data
There are three options:
- Bring the readings taken from the meter to any of the power supply centers.
- Call the call-center, where to leave the data to the operator. By the way, they work from 8.00 to 20.00.
- Using the Internet. To do this, you will have to register on the company's website, open your account, and enter the readings of the electricity meter.

Anti-magnetic seals
Since Soviet times, citizens have been trying to save money on electricity consumption by stealing it. Illegal actions, of course, brought them under criminal responsibility, which did not stop all citizens. Therefore, power sales organizations install anti-magnetic seals on the meters, which in appearance are similar to a regular label.
The bottom line is that many are trying to stop the operation of the meter with a magnet, acting on electronic parts with a magnetic field. So in the magnetic seal there is a sensor in the form of a capsule filled with a special liquid in which there is a coloring matter. If a magnetic effect took place, the substance spreads throughout the capsule, staining the liquid. This is a signal for the controllers, who immediately draw up an act.
Attention! Tearing off the label without damaging it will not work.
How much does it cost to cover the meter
- If happens replacing an old meter with a new one or in an apartment (house) for the first time the device is installed, then the seal is installed free of charge.
- If the counter is requiredt of repair, then after its completion, the installation of the seal is made with payment. Its value is determined by the energy sales organization, depending on the region.
If the seal is broken or torn off - will there be a fine
There are two situations to consider here.
- If it was found that the seal was torn off, then you must immediately contact the power sales organization. The controller needs to explain why this happened. If the damage was discovered immediately, then no penalties will follow.
- If the controller himself found the broken seal, and besides, the property owner cannot explain the reason, then most likely a large fine will follow. In addition, the controller will calculate the average readings for the entire period that he did not check. Therefore, the advice is to periodically inspect metering devices for their correct operation and the presence of a seal.
In principle, the question of how to take and read the electricity meter readings is not the most difficult one. But if you have any difficulties or additional questions, we are ready to discuss them with you.
