Why trim drywall edges?
Almost all gypsum plasterboard manufacturers trim their products with an edge that is located along the longest side of the sheet.As a rule, the edge of the edge has a minimum thickness, so that after the repair, the walls can be repaired with putty or any other facing material. However, when covering walls in several layers, the edge must be cut. This is done to prevent cracking and deterioration of the surface. Under the weight of additional sheets, drywall begins to deteriorate.
According to the specialists of the Knauf company, the durability and uninterrupted service of drywall is ensured by correct trimming. Now you know if you need to cut the drywall edge. But how to do that?
Drywall cutting methods
It often happens that the dimensions of the drywall sheet are too large: its dimensions simply do not fit into the room where it will be installed. Also, during repairs, it is often necessary to cut out small parts for the ceiling, niche, walls, etc. In this case it is necessary to cut the edge of the material. It is worth considering that if you carry out the procedure yourself, you will get a straight cut edge that does not require further technical processing.
There are two ways to trim drywall edges, let's take a look at them one by one:
- For the first technology, you will need an edge plane. It is always much easier for them to perform the procedure, as it makes the edge as clear and even as possible. Cut drywall sheets on a horizontal surface, in no case keep the material in the air or apply it to the wall. Chamfer trims are performed at a 22.5 degree angle, which is the optimal edge size for drywall. Chamfering in no case should be performed with sandpaper or a kitchen float: such manipulations can damage the drywall sheet;
- The second technology for cutting drywall is carried out using an assembly knife. Mark the line you will cut on the sheet and lay the material on a flat, horizontal surface. If you are performing the procedure on a table, the notch line should extend beyond the table top to prevent damage. After positioning the sheet, cut the sheet along the line that you previously drew. To permanently tear the cut drywall pieces apart, carefully take one side along the break line and tap on it. To make the edge look neat, it should be finished with an electric plane after trimming.
Now you know for sure whether it is necessary to trim the edges of the drywall before installing it.
conclusions
- Despite all its positive qualities, drywall is a rather fragile material that, if improperly processed, can be badly damaged;
- Before installing drywall sheets in the room, it is imperative to cut the edge so that subsequently no cracks and damage appear on the walls;
- Trimming the edge of a drywall sheet is done using either an edge planer or an assembly knife.
